Meet Jolly Joseph who won medals for Marathon at Infopark

Jolly Joseph’s disabled team got special attention in the marathon at Infopark, Kochi on 11 February. He carved medals on wood for 6000 runners and also ran a special race in the marathon.

Jolly, who is wheelchair-bound,’s enterprise ‘Takshan Creatives’ makes customized wooden products to order. He employs disabled people in his company. “Participants in the special race included the Takshan team, wheelchair users from Swashray Rehabilitation Center and hearing impaired trainees from Urja,” he said.

Eight years ago, while working as a graphic designer in the signage industry, a tumor in the spine left him crippled for the rest of his life. In those days the office environment was unfavorable for the disabled. So he started mentoring students as a graphic designer in energy. Here mainly hearing impaired people are trained as per their abilities and are trained in various companies to ensure their livelihood.

Later, with the encouragement of Urja’s founder Jaishankar, he founded Takshan Creatives as an ecosystem partner of Urja at the Swashray Training and Rehabilitation Centre. Swashraya supports people with spinal cord injury who use a wheelchair to overcome the psychological and physical trauma of disability and gain a stronger footing in life. At present, some prisoners of Swashraya also work with him.

He has been interested in arts and crafts since childhood and always wanted to pursue a creative career. The tumor put his aspirations on hold for some time. However, Jolly says she has achieved a lot since using a wheelchair.

The name Takshan is derived from ‘Thachan’, which means ‘carpenter’ in Malayalam. Jolly said that as part of sustainability, Takshan Creatives made medals for the marathon out of wood. Along with the Takshan team, hearing impaired trainees from Urja Kendra, wheelchair users from Swashraya and mainstream people were all involved in this work.

The special race was not part of the planned marathon programme. For the disabled, the marathon at Infopark made their day.
